ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

The first International Conference on this theme was organized at Anna University in 2017. The Successive conferences were held at various Universities of Tamil Nadu. The 8th international conference is organized at Gandhigram Rural Institute, Deemed to be University during 11-12th December 2025. The theme emphasizes the significance of materials development, various characteristics, and optimism regarding the potential applications of Applied Science and Technology including Nanotechnology. This would be a great platform for PG students and scholars to interact with reputed scientists and academicians of Tamil origins across the globe. It also opens up vistas by disseminating recent research for industrial applications. Further, it will pave an elegant way for them to innovate modern products, which will ease the processing and help society.

ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY

Gandhigram Rural Institute (GRI), founded by two dedicated disciples and contemporaries of Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. G. Ramachandran and Dr. T. S. Soundaram Ramachandran, has as its foundation Mahatma Gandhi’s revolutionary philosophy of Nai Talim, which effectively bridges the cognitive and practical dimensions, and focuses on the holistic development of learners, with an emphasis on skill development through value-based education, rooted in indigenous cultures and traditions. Since its establishment in 1956, GRI has been unstintingly contributing to higher education and has successfully pioneered rural higher education. Gandhigram Rural Institute is quite active on both campus and rural areas in the vicinity, benefitting and enriching one another. Besides, its contribution to teaching, from diploma, degree and all the way to post-doctorate levels, the Institute applies the learnings from both scientific and social research to solve contemporary rural problems. The curriculum is a combination of theoretical, practical and extension experiments. The Institute has become home to many pioneering models of rural development programmes under various governmental and non-governmental organizations. The curricular model, developed at GRI organically integrating teaching, research and extension, has earned the Institute, the status of Deemed University in 1976 by UGC, the ‘A++’ Grade (4th Cycle) by NAAC in 2025, the five-star status by NAAC in 2002, ‘A’ Grade during the re-accreditation in 2010 by NAAC and ‘A’ Grade in its third cycle of reaccreditation in the year 2016.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

In 1965, the Department of Physics blossomed into an independent entity and was offering Diploma in Rural Services with Mathematics and Chemistry as allied subjects with Physics as core subject. The examinations were conducted by the National Council for Rural Higher Education, New Delhi and the DRS was awarded. In 1976, the Gandhigram Rural Institute was elevated to the status of a Deemed University and the Department started offering and issuing B.Sc. Degree programme in Physics with Chemistry and Mathematics as allied subjects. Considering the need for offering the PG programme in Physics, the Department of Physics offered M.Sc. Degree programme in Applied Physics in 1987. This Degree programme was later in 1994 renamed as M.Sc. (Physics). The Department started admitting students to the Ph.D. programme in 1991 and M.Phil. Degree in Physics during the academic year 2009-10 and thereafter, the Department is supported by DST-FIST Level “A” in 2016 and Level “B” in 2024.

ABOUT ISTA

The Indian Science and Technology Association (ISTA) was started in the year 2017 by renowned researchers from both science and technology domains.  The Association was Registered in the year 2021. The goal of the ISTA is to bring these expertise in one platform, to work together for the benefit of rural students. This array of scholars belongs to diverse research fields ranging from theoretical physics, applied physics, general chemistry, applied chemistry, biotechnology, crystallography, mechanical engineering, data sciences, metallurgy, mineralogy material sciences, etc. It is a registered society, actively involved in organizing conferences/seminars on various topics at various places to improve research exposure for College and University students, especially those from rural backgrounds. In addition to various other activities, the ISTA also has been actively working for the development of science in Tamil language and to kindle interest among rural students who were studied in Tamil medium towards scientific research. We work effectively to simulate the research interest, to improve understanding and to nourish research attitude among rural students who studied or studying in Tamil medium and to lay the firm foundation for their future research endeavours.
